After graduating with a BA (Hons) degree in Drama, Applied Theatre and Education at Central School of Speech and Drama, Will decided to pursue interests in writing (for) theatre on the MA Performance Practices and Research programme, which he completed in January 2010. During the course, Will experimented with a variety of performances practices: working with/from the body in performance; using projection, (live) media and film; working with text, sound and image for devising – all to investigate group defined enquiries in a ‘Practice-as-Research’ capacity.
Through this approach, Will developed an extended research project entitled Aleastory, in which he: wrote a ‘devising text’ [“Aleastory”]; undertook the role of producer for a variety of Aleastory-based smaller projects; curated the culminating performance-event; and documented the process on a specially designed website (www.aleastory.co.uk).
Will has also worked as a Drama Practitioner in educational and community settings. He has worked with Haringey Shed at Hornsey Youth Theatre; Dazu‘s ‘Street Theatre‘ and ‘Saturday Art’ sessions; co-facilitated a drama in education project at the Chiddingly Festival (2008); been commissioned to script a piece of Theatre in Education for the Drugs and Alcohol Service London; and undertaken freelance work reading scripts for the Bush Theatre and independent film companies.
Will is primarily influenced by the theatrical work of Forced Entertainment, and the writings of Italo Calvino and Tim Etchells. He has been writing the short-story installments of ‘Tχ’ for a number of months, and plans to expand this project into a multiple-writer venture. Will is a founder member of Alea Theatre and has overseen the company’s work so far: Home Sweet Home; Qfwfw’s Room (for SJC Productions “Home” Festival, March 2010); Aleastory (‘The Festival of…’ – September 2009); and their upcoming production of Antagone (for The Space’s ‘Canon Season‘, September 2010)
Will’s original text for Aleastory can be found here; and detailed reflections and documentation from the project on the aforementioned website.
